Standard yoke 39"
Silverbirch's 39" ash canoe yoke replaces a worn or damaged carrying yoke with a genuinely shaped centre for a comfortable shoulder position when portaging.
It's the standard-fit yoke for Silverbirch Broadland canoes and new Hou canoes — and after a quick check with us on compatibility, it can suit other open canoes too.
Please note: As this item is made with natural wood, variations in colour, tone and grain pattern are to be expected. Each piece is naturally unique, so the appearance may differ slightly from the images shown.
A Shaped Yoke, Not Just a Flat Plank
Look closely at the Silverbirch Standard Yoke and you'll see it isn't the flat board some replacement yokes are — the centre section is genuinely wave-contoured, shaped to sit more comfortably across your shoulders when you're lifting and carrying your canoe. It's a small detail that makes a real difference on a longer portage, and it's part of why we're happy to call this a well-designed piece in its own right, not just a spare part.
Fits Silverbirch, Hou — and Possibly Yours
This yoke is confirmed for use across the Silverbirch Broadland range and selected new Hou canoe's — please check compatibility before purchasing. If you paddle a different brand entirely, or an older Hou canoe, it may still fit — but fit depends on your canoe's gunwale shape and how the yoke attaches, not just its width, and this varies by brand and construction. Fitting it to any canoe outside the Silverbirch and new Hou range is done entirely at your own risk; check with us before ordering, as we cannot accept liability for the outcome of fitting this yoke to an unconfirmed model.
Fitting It Yourself
The yoke is supplied deliberately oversized, so it needs trimming to fit your canoe's exact gunwale width before installation — a straightforward job with a saw and sander, typically done by laying your old yoke over the new one to mark the cut line. Mounting bolts and fittings aren't included, since the right hardware depends on your canoe's gunwale material; get in touch if you're unsure what you'll need. Check out our Canoe Parts page for fittings. Alternatively, for enquiries regarding workshop services for repairing or upgrading your canoe, fill out the Workshop Services contact form.
Please note: cutting and fitting the yoke is done entirely at your own risk — we cannot accept liability for any damage, injury, or fitting issues arising from self-installation or modification of this product.
A Natural Material, Naturally Unique
As with any product made from real wood, expect some natural variation in colour, tone and grain from piece to piece — no two yokes are quite identical, and the piece you receive may differ slightly from the images shown.
Want Maximum Shoulder Comfort?
This Standard Yoke's shaped profile suits the great majority of paddlers and portages comfortably. If you're planning regular long carries and want the most cushioned shoulder position available, our Silverbirch Deep Dish Yoke takes the same idea further with a deeper sculpted profile — worth a look if comfort on longer portages is your priority. Alternatively, consider the Level Six Helium Canoe Yoke Pad, for cushioning your shoulders when portaging.
Getting Your Yoke

It may — the yoke is supplied oversized so it can be trimmed to different widths — but fit also depends on how a yoke bolts into your gunwales, which varies by canoe brand and construction, not just width, and this yoke is not confirmed for legacy Hou models either. Fitting it to any unconfirmed canoe is done entirely at your own risk; please check with us before purchasing so we can help confirm it'll work for your boat, as we cannot accept liability for the outcome of fitting it to an unconfirmed model.
No, fitting hardware is not included. You'll need mounting bolts and washers suited to your canoe's gunwale construction — see our Canoe Parts page, or get in touch if you're unsure what to buy.
Measure against your old yoke, or gunwale-to-gunwale at your canoe's midpoint, and trim conservatively — it's easier to take more off than to add material back. Once it's the right length, drill through the gunwale and yoke and bolt it into place with stainless steel or brass hardware. Please note: cutting and fitting the yoke is done entirely at your own risk — we cannot accept liability for any damage, injury, or fitting issues arising from self-installation or modification of this product.
Yes — if you'd rather not cut and fit it yourself, fill out our Workshop Services contact form and we can quote for fitting it for you as part of our repair and outfitting service.
Yes — the centre section has a genuinely shaped, wave-contoured profile rather than being a flat plank, which spreads the load across your shoulders more comfortably than a basic flat yoke. If you're planning regular long portages and want the most cushioned option available, our Deep Dish Yoke takes that shaping further.
Both come in solid ash and both have a shaped, not flat, profile. The Standard Yoke suits everyday replacement and general portaging comfortably; the Deep Dish Yoke has a deeper sculpted contour specifically for paddlers prioritising maximum shoulder comfort on longer or more frequent carries. The Deep Dish Yoke is deemed a premium yoke option.
It's made from solid ash. As with any natural wood product, expect some variation in colour, tone and grain between pieces — your yoke may look slightly different from the images shown, and won't necessarily match your canoe's existing woodwork exactly.
