Hou Phoenix Solo Canoe

https://www.veranoinflatables.co.uk/web/image/product.template/2822/image_1920?unique=eddf2d0

Hou's dedicated solo canoe — a versatile Prospector-style hull scaled for British rivers, built to paddle brilliantly alone rather than as a tandem afterthought.

Starting at just 29kg, it's genuinely light enough to car-top solo, yet capable of multi-day expeditions and light Whitewater. Fully customisable, built in Norfolk.

Hou Canoes are currently running a Duralite Special in partnership with The Boathouse. This is on selected Hou Canoes boats such as the Hou Phoenix, Prospector and 13. See the description drop down for more info or click here to see the Duralite Special.

Hou Phoenix Solo Canoe — Lightweight Prospector-Style Canoe for Solo Paddling

A Solo Canoe Built to Be Solo, Not Adapted To Be

The Hou Phoenix Solo is Hou's dedicated one-paddler canoe — a Prospector-style hull scaled specifically for British rivers, built from the ground up to handle brilliantly with a single paddler aboard. It's the standard-configuration counterpart to the Hou Phoenix Tandem, sharing the same compact, versatile hull but set up as a genuine solo boat, not a two-seater pressed into solo use.

Scaled From Our Best-Selling Prospector Hull, For British Rivers

Hou founder Justin Snell built the Phoenix specifically "for British rivers in particular," scaling down Hou's best-selling Prospector shape rather than starting from a generic hull. By his own account, a large proportion of Hou's customers paddle solo most of the time and tandem only occasionally — that's the exact brief the Phoenix answers, and this Solo configuration is the most direct expression of it, demonstrated in the founder's own product video.

Where It Performs Best

On the water, the Phoenix Solo comfortably handles flat water, open water and light whitewater, inheriting the Prospector hull's traditional loaded-or-empty versatility. Independent reviewer Heart & Soul Adventures — a UK whitewater instruction and expedition business — has paddled this exact solo configuration across multi-day trips on the Great Glen, the River Spey and the River Wye, plus sea sailing and light bouncy Whitewater — for a boat built specifically around technical whitewater, our Silverbirch Agent 88 OC1 remains the purpose-built go to choice.

Who It's For

The Phoenix Solo suits paddlers of every level — Justin Snell has taught complete beginners to paddle it, and it's equally at home with paddlers who've been at it for 20, 30 or 40 years. If you'll regularly want a second seat for a partner, friend or child, our Hou Phoenix Tandem is the better starting configuration (either boat can be customised toward the other use at build time); if technical whitewater is your main goal, look at our whitewater range instead.

Construction Options

 Duracore Plus

DuraCore Plus is Silverbirch’s and Hou's more durability-focused three-layer polyethylene construction. It is well suited to regular river use, moving water and paddlers expecting frequent contact with rocky banks or riverbeds.

 DuraLite

DuraLite reduces the overall canoe weight while retaining the practical durability of a three-layer polyethylene hull. It is particularly beneficial when regularly lifting the canoe onto a vehicle, carrying it to the water or completing portages. Available constructions and gunwale options may vary between in-stock canoes.

The Numbers

At 14'3" (434cm) long and 33.5" (85cm) wide, the Phoenix starts from just 29kg in a solo set-up — the standard two-seat Tandem build weighs a little more — and carries up to 250kg, with plenty of capacity for a couple and their gear or a solo paddler's full multi-day kit.

Fully Configurable Phoenix Solo

Every made to order Phoenix Solo can be customised to suit your preferences and needs.

You can configure your canoe with options such as:

  • Exterior hull colour (including custom colour band combinations)
  • Internal colour
  • Trim height (Low-Line or High-Line)
  • Gunwale material
  • Seating options
  • Thwart options including sailing thwarts
  • End grabs
  • Lacing colour options

This means the canoe you receive is still built to your exact specification, rather than being a fixed pre-configured model.
