Hou Phoenix - A Compact All-Rounder, Built for British Rivers

The Hou Phoenix Tandem is Hou's most compact open canoe — a scaled-down version of our all-time best-selling Hou Prospector hull, built specifically, in the words of Hou founder Justin Snell, "for British rivers in particular." At just over 14ft, it brings genuine Prospector-shape versatility down to a size that's easier to handle, store and car-top than Hou's bigger tandems.

Scaled From Our Best-Selling Prospector Hull

The Prospector shape was originally developed by North American prospectors who needed one hull that handled exposed open lakes, flat rivers and bouncy whitewater equally well — loaded or empty. We've refined that same shallow-arch shape for modern materials and brought it down in size, without losing what makes it work: a boat that looks after newcomers to the sport while still rewarding experienced paddlers.

One Boat, Solo or Tandem

This is a genuine design decision, not a marketing checkbox: a large proportion of our own customers paddle solo most of the time and tandem only occasionally, so the Phoenix was built to do both properly. The Tandem ships as standard with two seats and a carrying yoke, and — despite its compact size — still carries enough for multi-day trips. If you'll paddle solo more often than not, our Hou Phoenix Solo ships set up for that as standard instead; either can be customised toward the other configuration at build time.

Where It Performs Best

The Phoenix handles flat water, open water and light whitewater comfortably, inheriting the Prospector hull's traditional ability to cope with bouncier moving-water rivers. It isn't built as a dedicated technical whitewater boat — for that, our Silverbirch Agent 88 OC1 is the purpose-built choice in our range — that being said, we have had users report great success on whitewater.

Built to Take a Beating, Light Enough to Carry

The hull is polyethylene, built as a three-layer foam-core sandwich construction — tough, low-maintenance, and, thanks to the Phoenix's compact size, one of the lightest 3-layer PE boats available today. That makes it noticeably easier to lift, car-top and store than Hou's longer tandem models, without giving up the durability a family-use PE hull needs. If you need the lightest possible phoenix, the Duralite construction option is the way forwards. See below for more details about construction options.

Construction Options

 Duracore Plus

DuraCore Plus is Silverbirch’s and Hou's more durability-focused three-layer polyethylene construction. It is well suited to regular river use, moving water and paddlers expecting frequent contact with rocky banks or riverbeds.

 DuraLite

DuraLite reduces the overall canoe weight while retaining the practical durability of a three-layer polyethylene hull. It is particularly beneficial when regularly lifting the canoe onto a vehicle, carrying it to the water or completing portages. Available constructions and gunwale options may vary between in-stock canoes.

The Numbers

At 14'3" (434cm) long and 33.5" (85cm) wide, the Phoenix starts from just 29kg in a solo set-up — the standard two-seat Tandem build weighs a little more — and carries up to 250kg, with plenty of capacity for a couple and their gear or a solo paddler's full multi-day kit.

Who It's For

The Phoenix Tandem suits paddlers of every level, from someone who's never picked up a paddle to those with decades of experience — we've taught complete beginners to paddle it solo and tandem, and it's equally at home with paddlers who've been at it for 20, 30 or 40 years.

Solo Beginners

Never picked up a paddle before? We've taught complete first-timers to handle the Phoenix solo from their very first time on the water.

Tandem Beginners

Learning together is easier in a boat built for it — the Phoenix's forgiving hull and two-seat set-up make it a genuinely good first tandem, not just a compromise.

Experienced Paddlers

Still a favourite with paddlers who've been at it for 20, 30 or 40 years — the compact Prospector hull holds its edge and rewards skill as you build it.

If you need to seat three or four people, or you're planning heavy multi-week expedition loads, our larger Hou Prospector or Chieftan carry more; if technical whitewater is the goal, the Silverbirch Whitewater range is built specifically for that.

Fully Configurable Phoenix Tandem

Every made to order Phoenix Tandem can be customised to suit your preferences and needs.

You can configure your canoe with options such as:

  • Exterior hull colour (including custom colour band combinations)
  • Internal colour
  • Trim height (Low-Line or High-Line)
  • Gunwale material
  • Seating options
  • Thwart options including sailing thwarts
  • End grabs
  • Lacing colour options

This means the canoe you receive is still built to your exact specification, rather than being a fixed pre-configured model.

Hand-Built in Britain

The Phoenix is designed and built in Britain, not imported and assembled — the same team that builds it can talk you through any adjustment to the standard set-up. First-quality boats carry a 2-year manufacturer's warranty for personal use, covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal use.
